Huizenga School to Start Two MBA Clusters at American ExpressThe Huizenga School is pleased to announce the development of two new MBA clusters at American Express in Plantation. Faculty members from the Huizenga School will travel to American Express to teach classes on-site. The 18-24 month program involves holding classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, which offers American Express employees the opportunity to earn their MBA degree with the convenience of taking classes at the same location where they work. A new-student orientation was held Wednesday, Feb. 20 at American Express, where 37 new students registered for classes. The cluster’s first term begins in April 2008. Part of the evening’s agenda included kick-off messages from several American Express executives and leaders from the Huizenga School. The Huizenga School continues to break the traditional education barriers in their commitment to provide quality education to students and corporate executives.
MBA Alumnus Promoted to VP and General Manager at Rockwell CollinsAlan Caslavka, an alumnus of the Huizenga School’s MBA program, has been named vice president and general manager of Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence (C 3 I) Solutions for Rockwell Collins. Rockwell Collins is a pioneer in the development and deployment of innovative communication and aviation electronic solutions for both commercial and government applications. In his new position, Caslavka will be responsible for developing solutions that enable decision and information superiority. In addition, he will be in charge of the Rockwell Collins facility in Richardson, Texas.
Master of International Business Students Travel to India
Professor of International Business Administration, Ruth Clarke, Ph.D., has organized an International Field Seminar from March 23-29 in Mumbai, India. The seminar is an educational trip, with 18 students in the Master of International Business Administration program scheduled to attend. While in India, the students will study at the KJH Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research. They also plan to visit local businesses, including the Port of Mumbai, Bombay Stock Exchange, and a pharmaceutical company. This is the 16th International Field Seminar, but the first to Mumbai, India.
Public Administration Professor Publishes Three Books
Professor of Public Administration, Jack Pinkowski, Ph.D., is pleased to announce his recent publication of three books: Homeland Security Handbook; Disaster Management Handbook; and Handbook of Globalization, Governance, and Public Administration. Pinkowski has been working on the Homeland Security and Disaster Management Handbooks for more than two years, and in addition to his own original chapters he coordinated a network of over 50 contributing scholars and subject matter experts from all around the world. The Handbook of Globalization, Governance, and Public Administration was published in 2006. The work in authoring this book involved more than 60 contributing scholars, and has already sold nearly 1,000 copies. All three books are available at Amazon.com.
Huizenga School Hosts 2008 Book of Lists Event
The Huizenga School hosted the South Florida Business Journal’s 2008 Book of Lists event on Wednesday, February 13. Over 300 companies from South Florida were represented at the annual networking event. Gary Press, Publisher of the SFBJ, recognized Dean Randy Pohlman and the Huizenga School as presenting sponsors of the event and corporate partners of the SFBJ.

Design Company Named Winner of Annual Kitchen & Bath Awards
DECOLAV, the industry leader in trend-forward bathroom furnishings and fixtures, was named a winner at the 2008 Kitchen & Bath Awards. Three members of DECOLAV’s management team are alumni of the Huizenga School and one is a current student enrolled in the MBA program: Robert Mayer, President, Class of 2002; David Breuer, Director of Information Technology, Class of 1992; Vince Abrams, Director of Product & Market Development, Class of 2005; and Jessica Philip, Senior Project Manager, MBA student. MBA Students Attend Final Capstone Course
Congratulations to the most recent groups of Huizenga School graduating MBA students who attended a week-long capstone course last month. The capstone course is the final class required of students prior to completing the degree program. Students from these capstone groups currently work for companies like Discovery Communications, Catalfumo Construction & Development Inc., M. Kent Thompson CPA, UBS (Bahamas) Ltd., FPL, Metlife, Titan Worldwide, Intercredit Bank, Department of Veterans Affairs – Miami Vatts., Korn/Ferry International, LandStar, Lockheed Martin, The NPD Group Inc., Warstila North America, Inc., Keys Granite & Daltile Company, and American Express.
Public Administration Students Attend Final Capstone Course
Congratulations to the most recent group of Huizenga School graduating Masters of Public Administration students who attended a week-long capstone course from January 28 – February 1. The capstone course is the final class required of students prior to completing the degree program. Students from this capstone class work for the following companies: Palm Beach County Fire & Rescue, Office of Transportation, Broward County Office, City of Hollywood Department of Public Works, and the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Faculty Member Promoted to Associate Professor of Public Administration
The faculty members and colleagues of Jack Pinkowski, Ph.D. recently offered their recommendation that he be promoted to the position of Associate Professor in the Huizenga School’s public administration department. Professor Pinkowski has been with NSU since November 2000, and returned to full-time faculty status last year after having served as Director of the Master of Public Administration program, the Executive Director of Executive Education and Educational Outreach, and the Director of the Institute of Government and Public Policy.
Doctoral Alumnus is Named VP for Academic Affairs at Southeastern University
Lyle Bowlin, D.B.A., a graduate of the doctorate in finance program from the Huizenga School, has been named Southeastern University’s new Vice President for Academic Affairs. Prior to accepting this position Bowlin served as the Dean of the College of Business and Legal Studies at Southeastern.
MBA Graduate Named Vice President of Nicholas Financial
Nicholas Financial, Inc., one of the largest publicly traded specialty consumer finance companies based in the Southeast, recently announced that Tim Schneider has joined the company as Vice President of Regional Operations. Schneider is a graduate of the Huizenga School’s MBA program. Most recently he worked for United Auto Credit Corp as Senior Vice President of Operations over all branch office locations east of the Mississippi.
