GBSA - Second Annual Gala Event on June 5th

From our current Business school students over at the GBSA, I would like to encourage you to attend their Second Annual GBSA Gala Event on June 5th!

The Gala Event is an appreciation dinner for all Huizenga School students. Held two days prior to graduation, it also provides a platform for graduates and friends to reconnect before their big graduation day. All Huizenga School student groups are present as well as members of the faculty and staff.

This year the theme is Masquerade and the venue is the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. The cost is $10 per person with four canned goods. (The cost is $20 per person without a charitable donation.) Students are encouraged to RSVP and purchase tickets in advance.

Huizenga School Starts MBA Cluster at First Data Corporation
The Huizenga School is pleased to announce the start of a new MBA cluster at First Data Corporation in Coral Springs, Fla. The MBA program will be delivered in the Huizenga School’s customized cluster format that is designed to make earning a degree convenient for working professionals. The First Data cluster classes will be held two days a week, during working hours. There are 16 students registered for classes, which began last month. “This opportunity will help make a difference in the career paths of the new students, as well as increase the recognition of NSU’s Huizenga School in the business community,” said Zeida Rodriguez, cluster coordinator and recruiter for the Huizenga School. Dinner with the Dean Event is a Success
On Wednesday, April 23, the Huizenga School played host to more than 65 guests—including 27 prospective students and 38 parents—for a “Dinner with the Dean” event. The evening event included a networking session with faculty, staff and the Huizenga School Dean, Randolph Pohlman, Ph.D. Following the networking session, a formal dinner was served. During dinner the students and their parents sat at tables hosted by a Huizenga School faculty member, where they could ask questions, discuss the undergraduate business programs, and get information about NSU’s campus life. Additionally, the dean addressed the students in a brief presentation. Following the dinner and presentation, the group enjoyed dessert in the dean’s boardroom and campus tours.

The Marlins Community Foundation Gives Scholarship to Huizenga School
The Marlins Community Foundation presented the Huizenga School with a $2,500 scholarship cheque on March 28 at NSU’s Night with the Marlins. This is the second year the Marlins Foundation has given to the Huizenga School’s undergraduate Sport and Recreation Management degree program. Nancy Olson, Executive Director of the Marlins Community Foundation, and Billy the Marlin were on the field before the game to present the cheque. The following Huizenga School representatives participated in the cheque presentation: Joe Pineda, Assistant Dean of External Affairs; Jade Chen, Director of Development; and Dr. Peter Finley and Dr. Jeffrey Fountain, Assistant Professors of the Sport and Recreation Management Program.

Huizenga School Dean Named Junior Achievement's 2008 Honoree
Randolph A. Pohlman, Ph.D., Dean of the Huizenga School was named Junior Achievement’s South Florida Invitational 2008 Honoree. The first-class golf tournament was held at Grande Oaks Golf Club on April 7. Funds raised at the event will go toward programs that educate and inspire elementary, middle, and high school students on subjects such as business, economics, and free enterprise. Past honorees include: Dave Thomas, H. Wayne Huizenga, Rowland Schaefer, Bernard J. Kosar, Jr., Philip P. Smith, Jack W. Miller, Tony Segreto, Max B. Osceola, Jr. and Stuart Kaufman.

Huizenga School Awards Student of the Term for Winter 2008
Congratulations to Kari Stogner, an undergraduate accounting major, and Humberto De Castro and Alissa Mure, MBA candidates, for being named the Huizenga School’s winter 2008 Outstanding Students of the Term. The Outstanding Student of the Term Award was created to identify and recognize students who exhibit the attributes and characteristics of the ideal Huizenga School student. Selections are based on the recommendation of a professor and a written essay. The winners received a scholarship grant to cover the tuition of one course for the 2008 spring term.

MBA Graduate is promoted to Manager of Financial Planning
Marcela Vergara, a 2006 graduate of the Tyco MBA cluster in Boca Raton, Fla., was recently promoted to Manager of Financial Planning for Latin America at Spectrum Brands. Spectrum Brands is a global consumer products company with a diverse portfolio of world-class brands, including Rayovac, Varta and Remington. In this new position Marcela is responsible for all aspects of financial planning and analysis, including forecasting and budgeting. She will also train new employees on the COGNOS system, which is a ERP system used in planning and forecasting. As such, she will be required to travel to Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Columbia, Central America and Mexico to conduct training sessions. Marcela attests that her MBA degree played a major role in this promotion. “Having my MBA from Nova Southeastern University helped me to see matters in a different way and I was able to apply this knowledge in my career. It made me more successful at Spectrum Brands,” said Marcela. She has been at Spectrum Brands since September 2005, and previously worked in the accounting departments at Tyco and Motorola.

MBA Student's Marketing Firm is setting the Pace in Oklahoma
Samuel J. Bein, a current MBA student at the Huizenga School, is the CEO and President of Imperial Boogie, an Oklahoma-based marketing firm. Imperial Boogie is a funny name that has gotten big results. “My company personifies the entrepreneurial spirit of H. Wayne Huizenga” said Bein. What began as a college side-project has evolved over ten years to become Tulsa’s freshest voice in marketing. Imperial Boogie has a client list including LG Electronics, Bausch & Lomb, RJ Reynolds and Qualcomm. The firm offers services ranging from graphic and motion design to comprehensive product design and marketing. Steven D. Cooke, a graduate of the Huizenga School’s MBA program, has been honored as a lifetime member of Strathmore's Who's Who. Acceptance is granted based on the member's leadership, achievement and dedication in their profession or industry.

Professor of Management Presents Case Study on Southwest Airlines
Thomas M. Box, adjunct professor of management for the Huizenga School, presented his case study “Southwest Airlines 2007” at the Allied Academies International Conference in Tunica, Miss., on April 4. The case study was coauthored with Kent Byus from Texas A&M University Corpus Christi and won a Distinguished Research Award. It will be published in a forthcoming edition of the Journal of the International Academy for Case Studies.

Professor has Paper Accepted for Presentation in Italy
Kenneth M. Norton, an assistant professor of business and economics for King College, coauthored an article with Pan Yatrakis, Ph.D., a professor and the chair of finance and economics for the Huizenga School. The paper has been accepted for presentation at the Academy of International Business’ Annual Meeting in Milan, Italy from June 30 - July 3. The paper is titled "The Effects of Cultural Differences on Knowledge Assets and U.S. MNCs' Firm Value."

MBA Alumna is Promoted to Financial Controller and Treasurer
Yahaira Gomez, an MBA graduate, was recently promoted to the position of Financial Controller and Treasurer for Jewel River Cruise Line US, LLC. Yahaira brings with her more than 13 years of experience in corporate accounting. Most recently, she held a senior accountant position with Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. Prior to that, she was a manager of accounting and reporting for The World of ResidenSea. Yahaira has a well-established background in day-to-day operations as well as strategic planning, both of which are necessary for successful business operations. She has particular expertise in the implementation of financial controls in international environments.

Three Business Students Win Student Life Achievement Awards
On Tuesday, April 15 NSU held its Ninth Annual Student Life Achievement (STUEY) Awards in the Miniaci Performing Arts Center. The Huizenga School had three winners out of the 14 categories. Out of more than a thousand NSU employees, Josephine Campbell, from the Office of Program Management, was chosen as the Staff Person of the Year. Also, two student athletes from the Huizenga School won STUEY awards; Tim Coenraad was named Male Athlete of the Year (Basketball Team) and Megankate McDonald was named Female Athlete of the Year (Rowing Team). Congratulations to the three Huizenga School winners!

Students in MBA Day Program and Cedar Rapids Cluster Complete Capstone
Congratulations to the most recent group of Huizenga School graduating MBA students who recently completed a week-long capstone course. The capstone is the final class required of students prior to completing the MBA program. Some of the graduating MBA Day students work for companies like American Express and Sun Trust. The students in the Cedar Rapids corporate cluster completed all of the MBA classes in Iowa, but traveled to the main campus in Davie to attend the week-long capstone class.

Huizenga School to Induct Three into Entrepreneur Hall of Fame

The Huizenga School will celebrate excellence in business innovation and ingenuity as three captains of industry are inducted into the Entrepreneur Hall of Fame on Wednesday, April 16. Celebrating its 19th year, the Entrepreneur Hall of Fame honors the achievements of outstanding business people in the South Florida community. This year’s inductees are: Ralph A. Marrinson, President, CEO, and Executive Director, Marrinson Senior Care Residences; Douglas J. Von Allmen, Chairman and Founder, Beauty Alliance Inc.; and Jordan Zimmerman, Founder and Chairman, Zimmerman Advertising.

University-wide Open House

NSU will hold a campus-wide open house for prospective students on April 11 & 12 in the University Center. Whether preparing to start college as first-time freshmen or seeking to advance your career with a graduate degree, you will have an opportunity to meet faculty, staff, alumni and current students, and get information on the many bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs offered at NSU. Business Student's Coffee Company Endorsed by Indy Driver

DaSilva USA, a small-scale Brazilian coffee company owned by master of international business administration student Jonathan Evans, has been endorsed by driver Tony Kanaan of the Indy Racing League for the 2008 season. Kanaan is part of Andretti Green Racing. The Indy Racing League will begin its season on March 29 in Homestead, Fla. DaSilva USA is based in North Carolina.

Huizenga School Starts Undergraduate Business Administration Cluster at BCC

The Huizenga School is pleased to announce the start of a new undergraduate cluster program, which consists of six students who take classes on the North Campus of Broward Community College (BCC). This cluster was made possible because of the articulation agreement that was recently signed between NSU and BCC, allowing all graduates of BCC’s A.A.S. in Business Administration program to transfer up to 63 credits toward the completion of a B.S. in Business Administration degree at NSU. Hudson Institute Offers Executive Education Courses for Broward County Department of Health and Miami-Dade County Public Schools

The Hudson Institute of Entrepreneurship and Executive Education is pleased to offer management development and advanced leadership programs to Miami Dade County Public Schools and the Broward County Department of Health. The County Schools programs take place at the Miami Student Educational Center, and the Broward Health programs are offered on NSU’s main Davie campus.

MBA Graduate Promoted to Executive VP

According to an article that was printed in a Boca Raton newspaper, Michelle Caldwell, a graduate of the Huizenga School’s MBA program, has been named Executive Vice President of Garcia Stromberg of Boca Raton and Stuart. Caldwell additionally holds the title of CFO. As Executive Vice President, Ms. Caldwell will serve on the Executive Committee providing strategic planning and direction for the firm and will continue to oversee company operations, human resources, investment opportunities, legal and financial matters. Institute for Franchise Education Honored

Cheryl R. Babcock, CFE, founding director of the Huizenga School’s International Institute for Franchise Education, was honored by the International Franchise Association’s Women’s Franchise Committee with its prestigious Crystal Compass award for her exemplary leadership in franchise education. Babcock, who designs and develops executive education programs, leadership courses and teaches undergraduate franchise management classes, has served as executive director and arrangements chairwoman of the International Society of Franchising, a multidisciplinary, multi-national organization of academic teachers and researchers for 20 years.

MBA Students from Jamaica Attend Final Capstone Course

The capstone course is the final class required of students prior to completing the degree program. Flanagan High Students Prepare for College by Attending Lecture at NSU

A group of 40 students from the Academy of Finance program at Charles W. Flanagan High School got a preview of the college experience by attending a lecture at the Huizenga School on March 19. Albert Williams, Ph.D., Professor of Economics and Finance gave a powerful lecture on the stock market’s current trends. In addition to offering on-campus lectures, the Academy of Finance and the Huizenga School have teamed up to create a full-tuition scholarship for Broward County students who have completed the AOF program and plan to enroll in an undergraduate business major at NSU. MIBA Graduate Accepts Position at the European Parliament

Iliana Nenkova, who graduated from the Huizenga School’s master of international business administration program in January 2008, is working as an intern trainee in the European Parliament in Brussels from January 3-April 30, 2008. She has been working in Directorate General Internal Policies, within the Secretariat to the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection. The Committee is responsible for coordination at the community level of national legislation in the sphere of the internal market and of the customs union.

Director of Hudson Institute Publishes Articles in WorldCity Magazine

Vincent S. Daniels, Executive Director of the Hudson Institute of Entrepreneurship and Executive Education, is pleased to announce the publication of a series of articles he authored for WorldCity Magazine. International Business Administration Students Travel to India

Seventeen students from the master of international business administration program traveled to Mumbai, India as part of an International Field Seminar from March 23-29. During the trip, the students studied at the KJH Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research and visited local businesses, such as Glenmark Pharmacueticals, Mahindra and Mahindra, and the Bombay Stock Exchange. Before leaving for India, seminars were held for the students. Speakers at the seminars included Karl Pinto, the chairman of Goodwin Biotechnology, a company based in Plantation that was taken over by an Indian pharmaceutical company.

Business Etiquette Dinner at Signature Grand

On Friday, April 18, the Graduate Business Student Association (GBSA) will be sponsoring an Etiquette Dinner at 6:30 p.m. at the Signature Grand Hotel. The event will be hosted by Marry Harris, an expert in proper etiquette procedures (http://www.etiquettesavvy.com/). The event is by RSVP only, and attendees are encouraged to purchase pre-sale tickets. Cost for the event is $15 for students and $25 for guests. MBA Alumna Starts Online Tutorial Program for Caribbean Students

Shalette Ashman East, a graduate of the Huizenga School’s MBA program and a current student in the Ph.D. program at NSU’s School of Computer and Information Sciences, is pleased to announce the successful startup of her company, CaribbeanExams.com. As an international student from Jamaica, Shalette was inspired to start an online tutorial system for Jamaican students in 6th grade to help them study and prepare for the GSAT, the required standardized exam in the Caribbean. Her program is now being used by over 80 schools in Jamaica, has expanded past Jamaica with offerings throughout the Caribbean.

Professor Travels to Brazil to Collect Data for Research Project

As part of an ongoing research project on social capital, performance, and the internationalization of emerging market firms by Ramdas Chandra, Ph.D. and Ruth Clarke, Ph.D., professors of International Business, Clarke travelled to Brazil to collect data. During her visit to the cities of Sao Paolo and Vitoria, Clarke spoke to attendees at the Vitoria Stone Fair, which is the second largest fair in the world. From this experience, Clarke received coverage in Economia, a Brazilian daily newspaper. Additionally, this visit helped to gain further insight into the Stone and Apparel industries, which will contribute to the research.

Business School Scholarship for African American South Florida Residents
Did you know that the Jacki Tuckfield Memorial Business Scholarship is open to all African American South Florida residents who are enrolled in a graduate business program? Jacki Tuckfield received her MBA from NSU in 1996, and many Huizenga School students have been honored with this award over the past ten years. There will be 25 winners for this academic year. MBA Graduate Named Executive VP at Syniverse

Alfredo de Cárdenas, an MBA graduate of the Huizenga School, was named executive vice president for North America at Syniverse Technologies. De Cárdenas joined Syniverse on March 31 from Nortel Networks, where he held various executive positions since 1992. Syniverse is a leading provider of technology and business solutions for the global telecommunications industry.

International Business Professor Authors Chapter in Book

A new book entitled, “Corporate Governance and International Business,” which was published by Palgrave MacMillan, includes a chapter authored by Dr. Ruth Clarke, Ph.D., a professor at the Huizenga School. The chapter was co-authored with Dr. Viola Makin and Marc Albon. The chapter is entitled “Corporate Governance Challenges for Dual-registered Companies from Emerging Markets: Focus on South Africa.”

Huizenga School to Start Two MBA Clusters at American Express
The Huizenga School is pleased to announce the development of two new MBA clusters at American Express in Plantation. Faculty members from the Huizenga School will travel to American Express to teach classes on-site. The 18-24 month program involves holding classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, which offers American Express employees the opportunity to earn their MBA degree with the convenience of taking classes at the same location where they work. A new-student orientation was held Wednesday, Feb. 20 at American Express, where 37 new students registered for classes. The cluster’s first term begins in April 2008. Part of the evening’s agenda included kick-off messages from several American Express executives and leaders from the Huizenga School. The Huizenga School continues to break the traditional education barriers in their commitment to provide quality education to students and corporate executives.

MBA Alumnus Promoted to VP and General Manager at Rockwell Collins
Alan Caslavka, an alumnus of the Huizenga School’s MBA program, has been named vice president and general manager of Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence (C 3 I) Solutions for Rockwell Collins. Rockwell Collins is a pioneer in the development and deployment of innovative communication and aviation electronic solutions for both commercial and government applications. In his new position, Caslavka will be responsible for developing solutions that enable decision and information superiority. In addition, he will be in charge of the Rockwell Collins facility in Richardson, Texas.

Master of International Business Students Travel to India
Professor of International Business Administration, Ruth Clarke, Ph.D., has organized an International Field Seminar from March 23-29 in Mumbai, India. The seminar is an educational trip, with 18 students in the Master of International Business Administration program scheduled to attend. While in India, the students will study at the KJH Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research. They also plan to visit local businesses, including the Port of Mumbai, Bombay Stock Exchange, and a pharmaceutical company. This is the 16th International Field Seminar, but the first to Mumbai, India.

Public Administration Professor Publishes Three Books
Professor of Public Administration, Jack Pinkowski, Ph.D., is pleased to announce his recent publication of three books: Homeland Security Handbook; Disaster Management Handbook; and Handbook of Globalization, Governance, and Public Administration. Pinkowski has been working on the Homeland Security and Disaster Management Handbooks for more than two years, and in addition to his own original chapters he coordinated a network of over 50 contributing scholars and subject matter experts from all around the world. The Handbook of Globalization, Governance, and Public Administration was published in 2006. The work in authoring this book involved more than 60 contributing scholars, and has already sold nearly 1,000 copies. All three books are available at Amazon.com.

Huizenga School Hosts 2008 Book of Lists Event
The Huizenga School hosted the South Florida Business Journal’s 2008 Book of Lists event on Wednesday, February 13. Over 300 companies from South Florida were represented at the annual networking event. Gary Press, Publisher of the SFBJ, recognized Dean Randy Pohlman and the Huizenga School as presenting sponsors of the event and corporate partners of the SFBJ.

Design Company Named Winner of Annual Kitchen & Bath Awards
DECOLAV, the industry leader in trend-forward bathroom furnishings and fixtures, was named a winner at the 2008 Kitchen & Bath Awards. Three members of DECOLAV’s management team are alumni of the Huizenga School and one is a current student enrolled in the MBA program: Robert Mayer, President, Class of 2002; David Breuer, Director of Information Technology, Class of 1992; Vince Abrams, Director of Product & Market Development, Class of 2005; and Jessica Philip, Senior Project Manager, MBA student. MBA Students Attend Final Capstone Course
Congratulations to the most recent groups of Huizenga School graduating MBA students who attended a week-long capstone course last month. The capstone course is the final class required of students prior to completing the degree program. Students from these capstone groups currently work for companies like Discovery Communications, Catalfumo Construction & Development Inc., M. Kent Thompson CPA, UBS (Bahamas) Ltd., FPL, Metlife, Titan Worldwide, Intercredit Bank, Department of Veterans Affairs – Miami Vatts., Korn/Ferry International, LandStar, Lockheed Martin, The NPD Group Inc., Warstila North America, Inc., Keys Granite & Daltile Company, and American Express.

Public Administration Students Attend Final Capstone Course
Congratulations to the most recent group of Huizenga School graduating Masters of Public Administration students who attended a week-long capstone course from January 28 – February 1. The capstone course is the final class required of students prior to completing the degree program. Students from this capstone class work for the following companies: Palm Beach County Fire & Rescue, Office of Transportation, Broward County Office, City of Hollywood Department of Public Works, and the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Faculty Member Promoted to Associate Professor of Public Administration
The faculty members and colleagues of Jack Pinkowski, Ph.D. recently offered their recommendation that he be promoted to the position of Associate Professor in the Huizenga School’s public administration department. Professor Pinkowski has been with NSU since November 2000, and returned to full-time faculty status last year after having served as Director of the Master of Public Administration program, the Executive Director of Executive Education and Educational Outreach, and the Director of the Institute of Government and Public Policy.

Doctoral Alumnus is Named VP for Academic Affairs at Southeastern University
Lyle Bowlin, D.B.A., a graduate of the doctorate in finance program from the Huizenga School, has been named Southeastern University’s new Vice President for Academic Affairs. Prior to accepting this position Bowlin served as the Dean of the College of Business and Legal Studies at Southeastern.

MBA Graduate Named Vice President of Nicholas Financial
Nicholas Financial, Inc., one of the largest publicly traded specialty consumer finance companies based in the Southeast, recently announced that Tim Schneider has joined the company as Vice President of Regional Operations. Schneider is a graduate of the Huizenga School’s MBA program. Most recently he worked for United Auto Credit Corp as Senior Vice President of Operations over all branch office locations east of the Mississippi.

Unfortunately I was ill and couldn't make it, so thanks to Dave Ogman our newly nominated Chapter VP and Deborah Perlicz from the Alumni office for helping to make it a success in my absence. I will be posting event photos as soon as I get them from the alumni office, and hope to see the rest of you at future events. More event and chapter info will be coming soon - the Joint Law-Business Event is coming up on March 19 and there is also an Alumni Marlins Baseball game event coming up at the end of March.

Master's Student Gets National News Coverage for Coffee Company
Jonathan Evans, a Master of International Business Administration student at the Huizenga School, recently received national news coverage for his renowned coffee business. Jonathan is the CEO and owner of North Carolina-based DaSilva coffee, a highly regarded small-scale Brazilian coffee company. DaSilva was recently spotlighted in an article written by Susan Buchanan, a Dow Jones Reporter, where Jonathan was documented for his “sustainable coffee” business efforts. Doctoral Candidate Publishes Book
Matthew G. Kenney, Doctor of Business Administration candidate, recently published his first book entitled “Entrepreneurship: Myths, Realities, and Rewards.” According to Matthew, "Embarking upon an entrepreneurial career is a paradoxical experience. It can simultaneously be rewarding and terrifying. Taking the plunge may be easier if you remember that entrepreneurship isn't just about being self-employed, it's about being yourself. Huizenga School Graduate Lands Job at 5th Largest Accounting Firm in U.S.
Maritery Batista, a 2002 Master of Business Administration graduate, recently landed a job as a tax associate at RSM McGladrey Inc., the fifth largest accounting firm in the U.S. and the sixth largest firm globally. In addition, Maritery is currently working on sitting for the CPA exam, and hopeful for entering NSU’s LLM program in taxation. Jessica Hoppe, a 2003 graduate of the MBA in Entrepreneurship program, has found entrepreneurial success in the start-up of Hops Construction Inc. M.B.A. Graduate Gets Promoted After Earning Degree
Congratulations to Annie C. Redd, an M.B.A. graduate of the Huizenga School, who was promoted in March to the position of Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida.

M.B.A. Graduate Recognized by the Florida Education Association
Hera Jaclyn Becker, a 22-year-old Huizenga School M.B.A. graduate, was recently featured on the Florida Education Association's (FEA) Web site for her entrepreneurial efforts. Becker recognized the need for children to show their appreciation on Mother's Day and Father's Day for the special caregivers in their lives. As such, Becker was inspired to pursue a unique business venture, which involved the creation of a card company for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day cards. Unlike the traditional holiday cards, Becker’s card company helps to promote equal opportunity for all children to celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day by adding more appropriate terminology for the holidays. 2007 Homecoming Weekend

This weekend I attended several events representing the MBA Alumni Chapter. for Homecoming 2007 The kickoff to the Homecoming weekend was the Celebration of Excellence on Thursday evening January 25th - where David H. Rush and Frank Till, Jr., Ed.D., received the university’s highest honor, the President’s Community Award. Also, our own John E. DiBenedetto, DBA (1985) received the Distinguished alumni award for our college the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship.

Friday morning saw the Breakfast of Champions and later the Alumni Association President's Retreat where I met with the Alumni Association chapter presidents from regional chapters and also the local professional chapters. The MBA Chapter earned a Bronze level chapter achievement award as well as an award for participating actively as a chapter in 2006. It was a great day with all of the other Presidents and I learned a lot about how each Chapter handles their operations with their alumni participants. The groundwork was laid for the first joint Business-Law Chapter Networking event, and it will be happening sometime in the next few months. I wasn't able to participate in the other homecoming activities due to personal commitments, but if you want to see some photos of the weekend, click here.
